The Golden Jubilee Event

The Golden jubilee event organized by the Department of History, University of Jaffna.
The History Department organized a speech event On November 4, 2024, led by Mrs.Shathini Arulanantham, the Head, Department of History, University of Jaffna. The keynote address was delivered by Josep Emil Jeyaseelan Rasanayagam (Bishop Emil Retired Priest Home). The discussions primarily focused on “The Latin Catholic Church and the Konkani Brahmins in Sri Lanka”.
In the 17th century, the influence of the VOC overshadowed Catholicism. Consequently, Brahmins who spoke Konkani in Goa migrated to Kerala in 1687, where they taught Tamil, and later moved through the Columbuthurai harbor located in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, resembling fishermen and those in poverty. Unfortunately, they encountered challenges from the Dutch commander and were forced to flee to Puttlam, where they found no favorable conditions. As a result of this crisis, they eventually moved from Puttlam to the mainland. Consequently, they were compelled to travel to the Kingdom of Kandy. This kingdom is regarded as a sacred site where Buddhism is upheld, despite the presence of certain Hindu elements during the Nayak Dynasty’s reign. As a result, Buddhism and its traditions have been deeply ingrained in the Kingdom of Kandy for an extended period, and they are currently facing significant challenges. Nevertheless, the outbreak of deadly diseases inadvertently benefited their stay, as both the populace and the state council members have provided assistance to those suffering from the famine.
Due to this crisis, the Konkani Brahmins played a significant role in the Kingdom of Kandy, thereby enhancing their opportunities to engage the state council in Kingdom of Kandy. A key characteristic of the Corporation was the influence of Brahmins who communicated in the Konkani language within the royal council of the Kandy kingdom. The Brahmins’ influence started to rise within the Kandyan Kingdom, and it is important to highlight that the presentation was central to these matters.
The presentation concluded with a vote of thanks.
