Graduate Profile of Archaeology

Archaeology Graduates of the University of Jaffna will possess a critical view based on the origin of humenthe humen past and other archaeological heritage. They will be familiarized with how laboratory examinations of materials found in archaeological research lead to an increased analytical understanding of the period, place, culture and or event in question and how to investigate the social, historical and cultural contexts of archaeological research using multi – disciplinary research, drawing on a wider range of other disciplines. They will have the ability to apply theoretical and scientific principles and concepts to archaeological problems. They will be competent and skill carriers and preserve the history.

Programme Attributes of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Archaeology

Thus, those who are graduating with Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Archaeology from the University of Jaffna will have the following attributes.

  • Having a clear knowledge of the core content of the history of thought and basic theoretical foundations of Archaeology.
  • Become competent in the formation of archaeological records – conducting archaeological excavation such as how to record, investigate, analysis and interpret archaeological derived remains.

  • Prepare the students to meet the challenges in the field of Archaeology for the preservation and conservation of the monuments.
  • Educate the younger generation on the importance of heritage monuments in Archaeology. It also creates awareness of the need for upholding Archaeological Heritage within the Societies.
  • Develop an archaeological hub at the regional level with national and international perspectives.
  • Able to apply general and transferable skills; ICT skills and the ability to use new technologies and ICT tools, Communication skills with trilingual proficiency (English, Tamil, and Sinhala), Soft skills – interpersonal skills, teamwork, time management skills, social responsibility and ethical practice and ability to meet the stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Provide greater support and facilitate to produce Graduates with the professional skills, knowledge and principles to find employment and the research and analytical background to receive and interpret information, express ideas and share Archaeological knowledge with diverse parties in a range of different formats.
